Today I’d to share with you some things about the words that you speak.
Now usually when words and speaking are mentioned, there are those that pull away. Some people recoil and say that this is new age, or some kind of occult teaching… and they are afraid of it. However the reality is that the scriptures have quite a bit to say regarding the importance of the words that we speak and what we say.
Our words are actually quite powerful – although we often don’t take time to consider this fact. Many of us actually let our mouth run in a kind of autopilot mode, reacting to what we currently are seeing and experiencing, instead of using the God-given power of our words to shape our lives.
That’s right, I said that our words have God-given power to shape our lives. As I mentioned, many people do not believe this fact, and the enemy has been taking advantage of that oversight for far too long… so today we will be looking at the power of our words, as described in scripture, and how what we say, is actually important.
As we begin today we are going to look at several scriptures – some you may have heard before, and some you may never have heard, but all of them tell us something about the importance of the words that we speak. These things are mentioned in the Bible for good reason; God wants us to know that we do indeed have power and influence over our lives, by using our words. As I mentioned, I know that some people get afraid when they hear that, which is why we are going to be looking at these scriptures.
The first of which is Proverbs 18:20-21:
“A man’s belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”
We can see here that our belly (that’s בֶּטֶן in Hebrew, the seat of all hunger and desire), is satisfied in a way that we might not expect; with the fruit of our mouth! That’s scriptural. Your desires are satisfied with what comes out of your mouth – and verse 21 brings it even further: Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those that love it, those who join with and embrace their words, will eat the fruit. So even the power of life and death itself, the ability to preserve life or to destroy it, are in the words that we speak.
Some people don’t believe this, but there is a reason why these verses exist in the scripture. And there are more. Consider Proverbs 4:23-25:
“Keep your heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
Put away from you a fraudulent mouth, and perverse lips put far from you.
Let your eyes look right on, and let your eyelids look straight before you.”
Take notice here, that the directive here is to Keep (or guard) your heart with all diligence; because out of it are the issues (the source, wellsprings) of life.
And then it continues right on in verse 24, to say: put away from you a fraudulent mouth and perverse lips.
Now the interesting point here is that most people erroneously think of this as using expletives (swearing or cussing), however there is a much deeper spiritual meaning behind this.
You see, a “fraudulent mouth” and “perverse lips” are not talking about swearing, cussing, or using expletives, but being fraudulent and perverse regarding the truth of Jesus Christ and your identity in Him. As we look at the context it becomes clear in verse 35: Let your eyes look straight ahead; it’s saying don’t look at your circumstances – don’t look at the report of the world or what you see – instead look squarely at Jesus.
Let your eyes and heart focus on Him, and life will flow, and your mouth, your desires will be satisfied with Him, His blessings and His Grace.
Notice also that your heart, and your mouth are connected in these verses – one flows to the other. As the scripture says in Romans 10:10:
“For with the heart man believes to righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made to salvation.”
So believing and speaking is actually very much connected, and it is part of our new identity in Christ, according to 2nd Corinthians 4:13: We having the same Spirit of faith, we believe and therefore we speak.
From these verses we can plainly see that our words, what we confess is actually very important! The typical Christian, believes that they are still a sinner, and is constantly confessing their sin, and the troubles that they face day-to-day, and the many struggles that they encounter.
However we can see from the verses that we have just read, that we are to believe to righteousness! And confess to salvation!
What does this look like in daily life? Well, we should be believing the reality of the finished work of Jesus Christ, and our rebirth into our new identity in Him! And then using our mouth, the words that we speak to confess that very same reality!
So regardless of how you might estimate your current performance level, the reality in Christ Jesus today is that you are still a righteous, sanctified, justified, and loved new creation in Him. And your words should line-up with that reality.
Regardless of the challenges you may be facing, whether they are health-related, finances-related, or family-related, the reality is that you are blessed, highly-favored and well-provided for in Christ Jesus. And your words should be aligned with that reality.
You are not speaking these things to try and attract them, like the law of attraction philosophy – but rather as the scriptures have said, you are speaking them as a fruit of your believing that these things are actually your reality as a result of the finished work of Jesus Christ for you, and your complete salvation in Him! This is why Psalms 107:2 says Let the redeemed of the LORD, say so!
It doesn’t say to let the redeemed of the LORD constantly and repeatedly confess their sins, failings and hardships – no! But Rather that we, as the redeemed of God, should confess that we are indeed redeemed! And all of the fullness, of what that statement means! Our mouth shouldn’t be perverse and fraudulent to the truth any longer, but be in full agreement with what Jesus Christ accomplished for us (and in us!)
I encourage you today my friend, receive the truth of your new identity in Christ Jesus, and bring yourself fully in-line with that truth.
