Take a group of believers, and ask them what the Holy Spirit is for and you will get a wide variety of responses in return, ranging from “I don’t know” to “he is our conscience”.

The vast amount of differing answers demonstrates a lack of knowledge in this area, and it is not good because the Holy Spirit is vital and He is a valuable resource which all of us should know about – otherwise He would not be mentioned in the Bible.

So today we are going to examine the Holy Spirit in detail, and see exactly what the Bible says about the one whom Jesus sent us.

The Bible makes it clear that the job description varies depending on whether a person is saved or unsaved, even this very basic fact has escaped even some teachers and pastors who have never studied the Holy Spirit in detail, and this confusion has hindered many people.

Let us look at John 16:7-11:

Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send him to you.
And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
Of sin, because they believe not on me;
Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and you see me no more;
Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.”

I’m so glad that Jesus did not stop at verse 8! He knew one day that people would read just that line and be confused, and would need a further explanation. Praise the LORD for His great wisdom and mercy toward us!

Some believers think or have been taught that the Holy Spirit is here to convict believers of their sins… I have heard self-righteous believers even pray for the Holy Spirit to convict their fellow brothers and sisters in Christ of their sins.

My friends, this is not the case at all!

Notice what the scripture is saying, the Holy Spirit has three jobs, to convict the world of sin because of their unbelief in Christ.

The Holy Spirit convicts of only one sin, and that is unbelief in Christ so that all would be brought to repentance.

So what is the job of the Holy Spirit for believers today? To convict us of our righteousness through Christ’s completed work of salvation! Why? Because we see Him no more face to face until the second coming.

It is not the Holy Spirit’s job to convict believers of their sins! In-fact that is the job-description of Satan, the prosecutor. So you can see what great error it is to pray for the Holy Spirit to convict fellow believers of their sins when we should be reminding them that they are righteous through Christ ad have victory over the enemy.

The last job of the Holy Spirit to convict Satan and remind us that he is ultimately doomed, basically to keep kicking him when he is down, because Jesus already reduced the enemy to nothing.

One final area of the Holy Spirit that we are going to touch on today is the area of Tongues as the Heavenly Prayer Language. Many people do not understand Tongues and they are missing out of a great gift of the Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is also our helper, and in times when we do not know what to do or how to pray, we can use Tongues to let the Holy Spirit pray for us… It is even beneficial – although not always practical – to pray in Tongues throughout the entire day… It doesn’t have to be loud, otherwise people may mistake you for insane, but just constantly whisper it to yourself.

Then when you pray in Tongues… here is the key that most people miss: Listen!

Look at John 14:26 real quick:

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatever I have said to you.”

When you pray in Tongues and then listen, the Holy Spirit will guide you by reminding you and teaching you the truth of the scripture. And will also prompt you to choose the right way (teach you all things).

Trust Him, listen to Him.
Flowing in the Spirit takes vigilance and attending to His voice.
Thank God that He has not left us alone, but we have a great Comforter and Helper.
